WHAT IS A ROUGH CUT?

The term originates from the early days of filmmaking when film stock was physically cut and reassembled but is still used to describe projects that are recorded and edited digitally. What is a rough cut? A rough cut is the first edited version of a film, which make include unfinished visual effects and a temporary musical score. Rough edit and assembly cut are also terms that can be used to refer to this initial cut. All of the main pieces have been assembled in sequential order, but it may not contain all of the finer details, such as finished CGI. Rough cuts are sometimes used during focus group screenings. Scenes will continue to be tweaked or removed at the discretion of the director and editor before reaching a final cut. Rough cuts, and especially assembly cuts, tend to be far longer than the finished film.

ROUGH CUT SCREENING

On March 24, 2023, our Year 13 Class for Media Studies held our Rough Cut screening in the Mini Theatre of Harrow Beijing International School. Overall, my group's questionnaire had six questions and a small section dedicated to our audience to put comments and suggestions.

We had about 30+ people who came to watch our class' different music videos. They were of different ages which is good as we get to have multiple critiques of differing age groups so we'll be able to know if our style appeals general public or just specific demographics.

The questions we had were:

  1. Did you like the song choice and genre?

  2. Which age demographics do you fit into?

  3. What is your gender?

  4. Did the music video maintain your interest from beginning to end?

  5. How would you rate the quality of editing and filming?

  6. What is your ethnicity/nationality?

I did additional work and transcribed their written feedback to different charts and I also did some averaging of the scores using Microsoft excel.

The overall reception of our audience was good. The genre and song choice was our weakness but with all honesty trip pop/alternative pop is not a very common genre, therefore, the 8.5 rating isn't too bad. All our hard work and stress with the coursework process definitely paid off.

We also had valuable comments and suggestions on our form, see the attachments below to see!

From these comments, we decided to tweak ad edit our music video. We changed the color grading of the tub scene and I added some subtitles for the dialogue at the end. I didn't add subtitles for the whole song as the lyrics are repetitive and it destroys the overall aesthetic of the music video, furthermore, the creative idea we had when we made our music video is for the audience to create meaning through the visuals as they hear the song and not to create meaning as they read the lyrics.
