Genres are simply a way of categorizing. The word "genre" is a French word that would translate to "type" or "kind". Genres are used to target specific audiences, furthermore, it also enables film and TV producers to know how much funding they should secure by basing the success of past works that are in the same genre. Genres are identified by their codes and conventions, for instance, these can be seen in acting, lighting, audio, and mise en scene.

STEVE NEALE 'S GENRE THEORY

According to Neale's theory, genres exist to guarantee pleasure and meaning for the audience. Genres allow the audience to be attached and have expectations of what they will see in the movie.

Genre theorist Steve Neale says that genres evolve over time and remain popular because of what they provide for audiences.

  • 1. A genre should offer familiar conventions to appeal to fans of that genre (in other words – give them what they want and expect).

  • 2. Genres have to also offer new ideas and change/mix conventions to stay fresh and not become boring (offer something different to be unique).

As a result over time genres stay consistent but start to evolve through genre-mixing, changing character types, finding new ways to tell stories. This stops them from becoming ‘extinct’ or predictable.

What Genre have you chosen for your film opening and why?

Dima and I decided to do a Thriller for our film opening. Frankly speaking, thriller movies are not my favorite genre, due to childhood memories of me getting scared easily. However, I wanted to try new things and also partake in starring in the film opening. By doing these, I can expand my knowledge and have more experience.
